I would like to place on record my immense gratitude for the presence of Zippy’s friends program in Mauritius. I salute the sense of initiative of Mrs. Emilie Duval who went looking around for such a program, the trust Mr. Chris Bale placed in her and his unflinching support for the last 5 years, the collaboration and facilities given by the RCEA for the implementation of the program in our primary schools and last but not least the dedication and enthusiasm of our local team of teachers, psychologists and counselors.
For what we have just heard, I guess Zippy is somewhat like the King’s Fool in a Shakespearean play. He sounds simple and innocuous but in fact he acts like the pebbles in David’s satchel which challenge successfully the monster of violence and abuse that threatens our youth and families. The program is a kind of illustration of this basic intuition of the gospels: it is through children and people like them that God’s kingdom becomes a reality. Unless we, adults, become like children and allow ourselves to be taught by children, we won’t grow in humanity, and our society won’t get rid of its monsters. Zippy’s friends are true sons and daughters of David, not David the kind but David the clever shepherd.
With deep gratitude to the promoters of Zippy and all those who support it. You can rest assured of my full support.
